How Does Divorce Happen?

By Carol Cavanaugh

When two people get married, it is usually the happiest day of their lives. When Husband and wife is sharing feeling and thoughts. they are understanding the life than never go to divorce.

However, a look at the statistics shows otherwise. The Forest Institute of Professional Psychology reports that one of every two first marriages fail and two of three second marriages fail; proving that your chances of true happiness the second time around is not guaranteed. Somewhere between "I do" and the divorce papers, something went wrong. What could it be?

If the divorce comes quickly, it probably means that a couple stepped into marriage too quickly. Marriage is a giant step; a bed is not the only thing couples share; often, houses, money, cars and even TV time has to be shared as well. For people who have been independent, this isn't an easy thing to get used to.

Sometimes another man or woman is involved. The marriage may have grown stale, or a spouse may have gotten too close to a co-worker or friend. Some marriages cannot recover from an affair because the trust has been shattered.

It can be difficult to understand why couples who have been married for a long time decide to divorce. If they have survived a long period of time together they may think that no problems could come up now. Some couples separate after decades together because they have grown apart; often the result of career changes, kids moving out of the home, and other changes in situation. A lot of times you will hear someone say, I don't know her/him anymore.

Luckily, there is help for relationships that may be deteriorating. Many different types of marital counseling are available from churches, support groups, and counselors who specialize in helping married couples. It is typically not a quick fix, but counseling can help lay a solid foundation for a relationship.

Sometimes marriages don't last forever. The odds of a successful marriage improves when both parties are willing to work to find a solution. If you need help, please find a qualified, certified counselor in your area. It is well worth the effort and could possibly save your marriage. - 29954
