Enhanced Security with CCTV Systems

By Matthew Kerridge

Closed circuit television (CCTV) is a television transmission system, which can be wired or wireless. It sends signals by cable (wired) to a monitor or directly to the monitor by radio waves (wireless). CCTV systems most often refer to security and surveillance camera systems.

The first CCTV systems were utilized in the 1940s by the military. Walter Bruch, a renowned German engineer, created the first design and installation. The CCTV system was used during the testing of V-2 missiles in order to safely monitor the tests. Later in the early 1960s, the United Kingdom began installing CCTV systems in public places to monitor crowds during rallies and appearances of prominent public figures.

In addition to fighting crime, modern CCTV systems can perform a wide range of functions from image enhancements for the visually impaired to broadcasts of pay-per-view sports events. CCTV has many scientific (medical) capacities, including medical imaging, microscopy, and robotics. Other commonly used forms of CCTV are live video presentations used for special events, such as, concerts, sports events, conventions, and interactive teleconferences.

The "eye in the sky" is the term typically given to CCTV systems that are installed strategically in the ceiling of various businesses -- casinos, banks, and retail stores. The cameras are covered by a semi-transparent plastic globe which makes it extremely difficult to see which direction the camera is facing from a distance. Retailers often go a step farther to take advantage of this strategy by installing empty globes, giving the appearance of additional cameras.

CCTV systems play a major role in the field of law enforcement and continue to "take a bite out of crime". In addition to preventing, detecting, and even solving some crimes, CCTV cameras have been extended to assist law enforcement in civil matters as well. Speed cameras have been installed to monitor traffic violations, as well as traffic congestion, littering, and loitering.

With the rise of violence in schools, incidents of public shootings, and the ongoing threat of future terrorist attacks, the use of CCTV systems by all levels of government is significant. Surveillance cameras are used to heighten security in government buildings, airports, military installations, subway stations, hospitals, schools, and numerous other public facilities for enhanced security and public safety.

It is agreed universally by experts and laymen that the incidences of theft and vandalism are reduced by the mere presence of CCTV systems. Persons with criminal intent realize that they are more likely to be apprehended if there is a camera watching and recording their actions. To take advantage of this affordable and practical technology, many homeowners are installing CCTV cameras in their homes for added security for their families.

CCTV systems have gained great public acceptance. There may be some critics, with privacy issues, but the general public agrees that this tool deters crime and makes them feel safer. CCTV systems have become a symbol of security and safety in our modern society. - 29954
