Save a Life With These Home Alarms

By Todd Cavanaugh

With the possible exception of a very few small communities, it is simply not safe to leave your doors unlocked at night. In fact, in most places it is not safe to leave your doors unlocked during the daytime. Technological advances in recent years and the responsiveness of the home security industry have coalesced to create home alarms that can save your life. Some of these alarms offer levels of protection that go miles beyond the simple burglar alarm on the front door.

Among home alarm systems that can save your life are the systems that warn you, your neighbors and the monitoring company if an unauthorized individual gains entry to your home. These systems include:

-- alarms on doors

-- windows wired with home alarms that are triggered if the window is opened

-- yard home alarms that tell you someone is on your property

-- monitors of motion and movement inside a house with home alarms

-- glass break monitors that trigger home alarms.

These are certainly important parts of home security systems " connected home alarms for protecting or warning against intruders. But the population is changing, and our needs are also changing. As the population ages and people want to age in place (=stay in their own homes), personal safety becomes more important. New technology is also making life safer by using these home alarms for persons with special needs.

More families have vacation homes which are unattended for part of the year or are used only on weekends. As more people choose to run their own businesses from home, the garage often gains an office or workshop addition. There are now home alarms that can protect your property with smart monitoring and there are alarms that can save your life " literally.

You can now add home alarms to protect your family and your property in new ways:

-- Smoke and fire detectors. These home alarms notify the monitoring company and call the fire department. They are important in empty houses, garages, outbuildings, and when children and people with special needs are at home.

-- Carbon monoxide home alarms to protect your family's health and safety in the house and in the garage.

-- temperature monitoring alarms provide an alert if the temperature inside your home reaches an unsafe level (such as temperatures below freezing that could result in frozen pipes or extreme heat that could cause damage or combustion)

-- Devices that monitor rising water in your home activate home alarms to protect property, pets and family if there is a flood or a broken pipe.

-- closed circuit TV can help you monitor what is happening on your property and in your home to reassure you that family members are safe at any time

-- panic button home alarms allow you to immediately notify the monitoring company to send help if you need an ambulance, police or fire department.

Perhaps most reassuring are some of the newest home alarms that summon help at the request of a family member or notify you if there is no normal activity in the home. These home alarms have been created primarily for elderly family members who either want to "age in place" (remain in their own homes independently) or who are at home alone during the day or the night. But these type of alarms are also ideal for children who are at home alone after school or for people with other special needs or disabilities.

The first device is a help button home alarm. These are worn on the wrist, finger or around the neck of someone with special needs. If the person needs help of any kind and cannot reach the phone, the button will activate an alarm and send the needed help. You can go on with your daily activities with the knowledge that your loved one is safe.

The other type of specialized monitor is placed within key parts of the house. These home alarms monitor movement or activity in various parts of the house at critical times. For example, if there is no activity in the area where medications are kept at the time the individual is due to take medicine, an alert will be issued and you can check on your family member.

Home security technology has come far in the past few years to produce home alarms that not only protect our homes and our families from intruders, but can safeguard the well-being of your family members. Shouldn't you be prepared to save a life with these home alarms? - 29954
