The 3 Competent Flower Designer Types - Choose One That Will Create A Fabulous Flower Arrangement For You

By James Earley

An important position in a flower shop is the floral designer. The owner, a manager, or other employee may fulfill the role of the flower designer. This position's role is to create designs using flowers. It is the individual that interprets and fulfills a customer's request into a flower design. Because not all creations are viewed as equal, sometimes the resulting arrangement may cause the arranger to be judged as not being good. So what makes a good designer?

A designer is often times judged as being good or not good according to the resulting floral design they arranged. The recipient and customer will decide if the designs is good or not. This decision is directly tied back to the designer. These people will make a decision as to whether or not the designer has good floral design skills.

To help minimize or eliminate any negative judgements, the most important element that a designer must take into consideration is designing to the customer requirements. Other important skills that help a flower designer receive good ratings are having a love for flowers, and combining that passion with enough creativity and artistic talents to design some incredible looking floral creations.

A floral designer that views themselves as an artist will likely be thought of as a good designer. The artistic designers will create arrangements that grab a viewer's eyes. This is either a natural skill or acquired skill, and all good designers have this skill. A good designer will create a design with the intent of creating an "experience" for the viewer. It must be something more than just a vase with flowers in it - there must be movement, there must intrigue, there must be a natural curiosity, etc.

Three types of flower designers are judged as good - designers that create arrangements based upon following floral design recipes which others originally created, those who create custom-made flower designs for each order, and those that can do both. It is not a given that the judgement will be good for each of these types of designers. However, the judging really comes down to whether or not the resulting design is liked by the customer and fits with their preferences.

The designs made by sticking to a recipe or formula are not necessarily the most creative and certainly are not original. These designs are expected from flower shops that fulfill orders for FTD, Teleflora, 1-800Flowers, and other floral wire companies. This is because customers order a flower design based upon a photo or image and request the exact same thing.

By contrast, a custom flower designer will create a brand new design for each order and they do not follow any recipe. This type of designer must really interact closely with the customer taking great care to fully understand the requirements. These designers are generally the most creative and they use a lot more artistic skills than one that follows a design recipe. This type of floral arranger is the avant-garde florist -- one that does not follow the blueprint creations and creates the most amazing looking creations. Their creations can be incredibly beautiful and truly cause viewers to remember the flowers. However, they can also be too much or over-the-top and displease the customer or recipient, so extra care and caution must be paid up-front in capturing the customer requirements.

Some florists make fantabulous flower designers without much previous experience - they just have a unique and natural power to create gorgeous designs. There are others that require instruction and training following the direction of a master flower designer. In this case, the designer surely must find training classes to take as well as locating mentorship possibilities. Together these will help the person to enhance their skills and become labeled good as a flower designer. - 29954
