Save Money With a Fireplace Plug

By Paul Cameron

With up to thirty percent of the air you heat in your home escaping by way of the chimney, you may be trying to find a way to stop that energy loss, yet will still permit you to use your fireplace whenever you want to enjoy a wood burning fire. A fireplace plug can solve the problem of heat loss and still allow you to burn a fire whenever you wish. A fireplace plug will more than pay for itself in energy savings.

A fireplace plug is a plastic inflatable pillow that is highly effective at sealing the fireplace chimney. If the plug is in place, there's no more draft and almost no heat loss via the chimney. While the plug might resemble an inflatable swim toy, the material it's made of is specially selected to be resistant to the acids in wood soot and creosote so that the plug is long lasting.

Your firebox should be cool before inserting the plug. You should make certain that there are no sharp openings in the chimney that may tear the pillow. A brush or scraper can be utilized in order to remove creosote or soot in the area before inserting it. The pillow is simply lifted into the chimney opening and the handle adjusted to keep it in position.

While you'll see the difference in the next month's heating or cooling bill, the comfort of your home will rise right away.

In order to use the fireplace, all that you will need to do is remove the plug and pull the handle to open the damper. When the fire dies down, let the fireplace get cool and shut the damper. Re-insert the fireplace plug in the opening. The fireplace doors or screen conceals the handle so that no one realizes that it's there.

The amount of cash you save on one month's cooling or heating bill can easily pay for the fireplace plug. Along with saving cash, however, you'll also find that the fireplace plug makes your house more comfortable. Even when the damper is closed on the fireplace and the windows are closed in the house, the natural chimney effect pulls heated air out of the home and cool air in through the cracks around the windows. This makes your house drafty and there is cold air leaking in that can give you a chill.

In the wintertime you can enjoy every bit of air that you have paid to heat in your home. In the summertime, you'll find that your air conditioner is more efficient. There will be no more hot air and smoky smell filtering back into your home by way of the chimney. - 29954
