Features And Advantages Of Ergonomic Office Furniture Design

By Steve Calvin

The office interior is incomplete without office furniture, and the latter must be in tune with the overall office design. It must also be ergonomic in design to ensure that employees develop no physical complications after extended use of the furniture.

Over one third of an average employee's day is spent in the office, and if the office furniture causes him discomfort and body pain, then it may create serious threat to his health. Therefore it is crucial for employers to ensure that office furniture, particularly office chairs, are designed to maximize employees' comfort.

Any purchase of office chairs should be made only after making sure of a few things. You must make sure that the selected office chairs are stable, portable and optimally adjustable. The arm rests of chairs must serve their purpose well, and the height should be changeable so that the occupant can adjust the chair as per his requirement. The chair should allow easy movement of hands and legs such that the employee can execute his tasks without any hindrances. The back support is the most important component of an office chair. It must be appropriately padded and reclined to give the occupant a comfortable experience without any strain on his back and spine.

Office desks are the second most crucial office furniture items after office chairs. The desk must neither be too elevated nor too low, and must give enough space to the employee to carry out jobs both on his desktop and with his office files. Crowded or small office desks are highly inconvenient to work on and the user's body has to make a lot of adjustments which are usually bad for health in the long run.

Another important aspect of office ergonomics is where the pieces of furniture have been placed inside the office. For example, there must be sufficient alley area between workstations to facilitate easy man and material mobility, such that it does not cause any disturbance to a worker sitting at a workstation.

Ergonomic office furniture not only promises good health of the employees, but also increases their effectiveness and productivity at work. An ergonomic office permits a worker to better organise and manage his work and also offers an enjoyable and stress free environment.

Office design must always aim at complete non-existence of any physical inconvenience inside the office, or at least decreasing it to a bare minimum. The office interior must try to create such working conditions in which employees can do their tasks in a very efficient fashion without any health concerns, so that the company reaps the advantages of a healthy and efficient workforce. - 29954
