Termite Inspector: What Do They Do?

By Don Rodriguez

Al though a termite inspector is a professional with technical skills and know how directed towards helping you to protect and preserve your valuable property, many homeowners continue to have misconceptions about this valuable warrior in the war against termite invasions. Some people even think of this professional as a glorified salesperson.

If you want to avoid a sales pitch before you even know whether you have a problem, then you will want to avoid getting an inspector who is affiliated with a pest control company whenever possible. This will also help you to avoid conflicts of interest between the inspector and pest control company.

Not only do these professionals have particular knowledge and skills, they have certain tools and manners which once you become familiar with can assist you in being able to tell whether you are faced with a professional or an amateur, or worst -- an impostor. Does this person wear coveralls or a white lab coat or suit and tie? Coveralls might mean the person is really not a professional. At any rate, you should always ask to see the person's license. In addition, look for some common tools of the trade such as an ice pick or similar tool, a screwdriver, a writing tablet, a flashlight, a temperature gauge and a small hammer.

Remember that the purpose of an inspection is to determine whether your property is infested with termites and if so, the extent of that infestation. You want to look for signs of the presence of termites such as a cluster of wings, mud tubes, thin sheets of wood, and wood powder. That is why it is critical that you accompany the person to make sure s/he does a detailed inspection of your property. Particular attention should be given to the basement and attic and any crawl space beneath your home. Outside foundation should be checked as well as any trees you might have.

Finally, you should be concerned not only with whether or not your property has been infested, you should be concerned with whether there are conditions present which make your property more attractive to a termite invasion. The inspector should address these concerns. - 29954
