Don't Replace Your Kitchen Cabinets " Update Them

By Joe McLain

You might be surprised at how important kitchen cabinets are when it comes to the overall look of your kitchen. Unfortunately the designs and trends that were once in style don't last forever; neither does paint or stain. But if you don't have the cash, what can you do when your kitchen needs an update? Well, there are a few tricks to use to update your kitchen cabinet doors, and you don't have to spend a lot of cash to do it.

One of the easiest ways to update your cabinets is to just switch out your current door handles or knobs, which tend to quickly make cabinets look outdated or old. So you can replace them once in a while for just a few dollars, and they'll definitely help you update your kitchen. And whats not to love about new hardware on your cabinet doors? Just make sure you replace your old knobs with new knobs, instead of trying to replace them with handles; or vice-versa.

As you're looking for hardware for your cabinets, you might want to hit up the local flea market and bargain stores before you check out the big retailers. The hardware you find might be someones old hardware, but you should be able to clean them up to look as good as new. And most likely there's nothing wrong with them. The previous owner just might not have liked them anymore. One mans just is another mans treasure, right?

You also might want to think about repainting or re-staining your current cabinet doors. All you have to do is sand off the old paint or stain and get some new stuff on there. And be sure to remember that you also need to re-do the visible parts of the cabinets themselves so that they match the doors. Of course this method of updating your kitchen cabinets requires more time and work, but the results will be well worth it!

If you don't want to put in the time or effort to re-paint or re-stain, you might think about just replacing the doors of the cabinets. Look for doors that match the style and paint/stain of your current cabinets, but with a newer, updated look. When it comes down to it, the look of your cabinets is almost totally based on the doors themselves, not the entire cabinet; replacing just the doors is an excellent way to clean up your kitchen without spending the cash to do the entire cabinets.

Updating an older kitchen can be much more expensive than any other room in your home, so don't waste the money buying completely new cabinets when you can just as easily update them with a bit of time and effort on your part. You could even consider hiring a professional to build you just new doors for half the price or less than purchasing all new full cabinets. Besides, there's probably nothing wrong with your current cabinets themselves, is there? So why replace whats not broken? Create a whole new kitchen for a whole lot less just by updating your current kitchen cabinet doors. - 29954
